New Mexico Public Library Survey (a.k.a Annual Report) and State Grants-in-Aid Application Information

The New Mexico State Library (NMSL) participates in the national Public Libraries Survey (PLS) operated by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) with data collection support from the American Institutes for Research (AIR). Survey responses become part of a national file of public library data that is available to the library research community, state and federal policy makers, and other interested users. The data collected is often used by local, state and federal agencies for planning, evaluating and budgeting. More information about the PLS can be found on the IMLS website.

  • Recognized New Mexico public libraries complete and submit the PLS (a.k.a. Annual Report) to the NMSL reflecting financials, services, and acquisitions data based on the state fiscal year (July 1 to June 30). The data is collected in compliance with the 4.5.2 New Mexico Administrative Code which requires public & tribal libraries to complete a PLS in order to participate in State Grants-In-Aid and other funding programs administered by the New Mexico State Library.
  • Completing the PLS (a.k.a Annual Report) serves as the application for the State Grants-in-Aid program. Data from the survey is used to determine a recognized public library’s eligibility.
  • The PLS is open from July 1 through mid-August and covers the previous fiscal year’s activities. Surveys are completed online using Baker & Taylor’s Bibliostat Collect (via https://collectconnect.baker-taylor.com/login.aspx).
  • View the Annual Report LibGuide for more detailed information and to view the previous year’s training materials, etc.

The following tables are a summary of New Mexico public library statistics collected by the NMSL saved in Microsoft Excel. The data in the tables reflects what New Mexico libraries reported to the NMSL and, in some cases, includes revised information provided by the library or their administrative support.
