All Month Long: Library Card Sign Up Month
The smartest card in your wallet…Your library card! Library Card Sign up Month is a great opportunity to reach out to your community. Is there a local event you can promote your library at? Can you visit back-to-school nights? Set up a table complete with displays and brochures, and sign up those new patrons! More information from ALA >>
September 15th-October 15th: Hispanic Heritage Month
Starting on the 15th, this is an awesome opportunity to celebrate the great contributions of Hispanic Americans. A simple book display might do – or consider a program. For teens or adults, perhaps a movie night. For kids, how about a themed storytime? Visit these sites for more programming information and ideas:
- Hispanic Heritage Month.gov (all ages)
- Scholastic’s “Celebrate Hispanic Heritage” (for kids)
- Imagínase Libros (a great list of children’s latino/a authors)
September 19th: Talk Like a Pirate Day
Yo ho, my mates! Whilst we might be a bunch o’ lubbers here in New Mexico, no reason t’not sing a shanty. Ahoy! A pirate book display is indeed a treasure to love! Pssst, matey! Learn more >>
September 22nd: Hobbit Day
Wikipedia defines Hobbit Day as “the birthday of the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins…[who] were said to be born on September 22, but of different years. Bilbo was born in the year of 2890 and Frodo in the year of 2968 in the Third Age (1290 and 1368 respectively in Shire-Reckoning.)” Promote fantasy books (and of course, Lord of the Rings) to grades 6 & up. What a cool costume party! If you decide to observe this one at your library, please invite me 🙂
