Farmington Public Library’s Vision Statement is a literate and enlightened population whose lives are enriched by the resources, programs and services provided by Farmington Public Library. One program during the winter/holiday months is the winter reading program that begins Thanksgiving week and ends January 6, 2014. All ages are encouraged to register online using evanced summer reader, (yes, it’s not just for summer reading) and log books they have read. There are no prizes, no competition, it’s more like DIY reading! Just like summer reading, leisure reading improves vocabulary and comprehension and helps children hold on to what they have learned in schools or home education. DIY reading also includes logging books online from the downloadable e-book and audio book collection or logging books read at the Every Child Ready to Read story time program they attend at the library. We register about 300 patrons during this time, which is not as much as our summer reading program. Patrons share online book reviews to help promote leisure reading.
YOUTH Make.Do “maker fair” also recognizes participants registered for the winter reading program. Everyone that registered was eligible to make a 3D mini-penguin cookie cutter at the library’s December 28th youth maker fair event. It’s not a reward, but we do like to motivate our patrons to read any way we can!
