The University of New Mexico, College of University Libraries & Learning Sciences (UL&LS) has an opening for a Director of Access Services.
The faculty rank, tenure status and salary are negotiable based on qualifications and experience. UL&LS is looking for a forward-thinking, service-oriented, collaborative leader with a keen sense of the evolving role of research libraries in the digital age and demonstrated knowledge of best practices and current trends in all areas related to public services in research libraries.
Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Director provides overall leadership and vision for the Access Services Division, which consists of 2 faculty, 30 staff and 120 students.
Responsibilities include: managing Access Services at four main campus libraries, measuring and assessing outcomes of divisional activities; proactively planning for improved services; collaborating with other campus units to develop services including the implementation of Learning Commons; and advising and mentoring Access Services faculty and staff. The successful candidate will be a creative, collegial, enthusiastic and experienced administrator with a solid record of leadership and innovation. The ideal candidate should have excellent people skills, including a willingness to listen, flexibility, the ability to inspire, and an inclination to seek consensus. The Director will demonstrate a breadth of knowledge about research libraries and a commitment to continual professional development through scholarly research and publication, presentations, and service participation. Duties include but not limited to:
- Oversee the work of Circulation, print and electronic reserves, InterLibrary Loan, Combined Service Points at four main campus libraries, and virtual services desks
- Supervise faculty and staff assigned to the unit
- Consults closely with department colleagues and supports them in their daily work, professional development, and interaction with patrons
- Leads staff and faculty in Access Services to develop a comprehensive training program that produces responsible, knowledgeable, and helpful student employees
- Serves on senior library leadership management group
- Partners other units in the library to ensure excellent customer service
- Works with the library’s information technologies unit to select and configure appropriate student facing hardware and software
- Ensures that the stacks and print collection remain in good order and good condition
- Regularly assess the library service points and revises policies and procedures accordingly
- Actively participates and contributes to the development and implementation of library wide strategic planning and goals
- Generates and analyzes statistics on the use of facilities and collections
- Works with consortia partners and represents the College on various resource-sharing committeesEnvironment: The UL&LS Facilities and Access Services unit is responsible for maintaining safe, secure, inviting facilities for the UL. The University of New Mexico Libraries is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Greater Western Library Alliance, and the New Mexico Consortium of Academic Libraries and leads the LIBROS Consortium that hosts the shared catalog for seventeen academic libraries in New Mexico.Planning is currently underway in Zimmerman Library for the implementation of a Learning Commons.
