Thomas Branigan Memorial Library Introduces New Healing Library Box

In November, Branigan Memorial Library partnered with The Healing Library to bring materials designed to assist families dealing with a trauma navigate and personalize their journey toward healing. The boxes include books, conversation starters, activities, and community engagement ideas geared toward helping families deal with a range of difficult situations. The new box that will be available for check out is Death of a Loved One. Other Healing Library Boxes available in the collection include Death of a Pet, Divorce & Separation, Alzheimer’s & Your Family, and COVID-19.

Library card patrons can check out The Healing Library boxes for three weeks. The boxes may also be placed on hold, just like books and DVDs, using a library card. Healing Library boxes include a checklist to assist patrons in returning all the box’s elements and a pricelist for replacing these elements if lost or damaged.

The Healing Library is a project that started in the Fall of 2016 as a conversation between Kirsten Cappy of Curious City, a company which creates promotional experiences and materials for children’s books, and Megan Emery, then a student at Syracuse University earning her MLIS.

The Healing Library project became a series of kits designed to make a family’s journey of healing following a trauma easier to navigate and personalize.
