The New Mexico State Library has worked with the Explora Museum in Albuquerque to create activity trunks that teach STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) concepts along with early literacy. These trunks are funded through a grant from the New Mexico Library Foundation. Each trunk is centered around a particular theme and include books, crafts supplies, lesson plans and activities for libraries and their patrons. The Lovington Public Library currently has the In the Mirror trunk, which teaches about reflection and refraction. They had their first event this week and looks like the kids had fun!
The State Library currently has 6 trunks available to libraries around the state:
- In the Mirror (reflection and refraction)
- Spinning Science (motion and movement)
- Listen Carefully (sound)
- Water Play (water and liquids)
- Measure On (measurements)
- If You Look at a Rock (geology)
They are at various libraries around the state but if your library is interested in hosting one in the future, please email Youth Services & Outreach Consultant, Deanne Dekle at deanne.dekle@state.nm.us or call at 505-476-9705 .
