NOW is the Golden Age of Public Libraries

And philanthropists need to seize the moment to support them.

“Everybody is reading,” Ken Brecher, president of the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, remarked recently. “They’re reading on their phones. They’re reading on their computers.”

And, he went on, they are using the library to discover and access information that would otherwise be unaffordable or unknown.

Brecher was speaking at a recent convening of the ‘Conversations on Philanthropy’ series of the University of Southern California’s Center on Philanthropy and Public Policy. Technology, he emphasized, is ushering in a “golden age” of libraries – not making them obsolete.
