New Mexico State Library Vertical Files

The New Mexico State Library maintains a print vertical file collection of information about towns, cities, counties, events, people, and various other topics relating to the greater Southwest United States. The files contain newspaper clippings, pamphlets, articles, and a wide variety of other printed material.

The index for this collection is now available as a research guide.

This Research Guide includes three indexes — biography, general, and Santa Fe specific — that cover the entire collection. At the present, our vertical file collections have not been digitized. You are welcome to use the Vertical Files during our public hours and are free to photograph, photocopy, or scan the materials in the vertical files.

Vertical files can be a great place to start a research project. Contact the New Mexico State Library reference desk if you need assistance.
