Morning Session

OPENING PRESENTATION 9:00 to 9:30am
Makerspaces and maker culture: Libraries & the PopUp Makerspace
Parachute Factory director Mariano Ulibarri will give a quick introduction to the Maker Movement, with a focus on “popup” makerspace events in New Mexico Libraries.

RESOURCES 9:30 to 10:00am
Finding Makerspace Curriculum
An introduction to resources for planning makerspace programs in your library.

HANDS ON / MAKER WORKSHOP 10:15am to 12:00pmpneumatictubes
Maker Education & Maker Empowerment
Parachute Factory is part of Harvard University’s Agency by Design Learning Community, a
research project on makerspaces and maker education. This hands on workshop focuses on frameworks developed by Harvard’s research team. Participants will be introduced to Parts,
Purposes, and Complexities a thinking routine that encourages makers to slow down and
look closely at designed and made elements of an object.

Afternoon Session

The afternoon session is designed as a meetup for librarians interested in setting up Maker
Hubs in their libraries. NMSL Maker Hub Libraries will receive equipment, supplies, and
guidance on hosting independent makerspace workshops.

DISCUSSION 1:00 to 2:00pm
Discussion topics include:
● Strategies for equipping a space (resources for free / inexpensive gear)
● Community maker organizations (Curiosity Hacked, DIY.org, Maker Camp)
● Resources from NMSL

HANDS ON / MAKER WORKSHOP 2:00 to 3:00pm
Maker Education & Maker Empowerment
This hands on workshop focuses on frameworks developed by Harvard’s research team.
Participants will be introduced to Imagine If a thinking routine used to redesign or hack an
existing object or system to be more effective, efficient, ethical, and/or beautiful.
