AT YOUR LEISURE

Pre-recorded webinars to view at your convenience

Building Bridges: Democracy, Peace, and Conflict Resolution in the Modern World (ALA eLearning)

In a world marked by increasing polarization, societal fragmentation, and a sense of unease, the concepts of peace and collaboration often seem left out of public discussion. In this series, we will spend a morning fostering dynamic discussion developing innovative strategies to use the library as a catalyst for addressing regional and local conflicts. The event will feature two key sessions: Examples from the Field and Tools and Strategies. Participants will learn from libraries sharing insights about how to successfully navigate conflicts in the communities we serve, where practical approaches and resources will be explored. For librarians, who are at the heart of their communities, this format offers a powerful way to harness collective knowledge and creativity, ensuring that they are well-equipped to address the complex social issues they encounter. This session will provide an overview of all kinds of graphic novels in libraries, complete with extensive booklists and links to review sources so that your library will be the hottest destination for teens and tweens readers’ next comics fix. READ THIS NEXT!

In addition to the calendar of professional development webinars, Read This Next! highlights one recent reading (print book, eBook, journal article or blog post published within the last five years) focusing on the librarianship profession.

In honor of Pride Month and to kick off the summer reading festivities, the book selection for June is “LGBTQIA+: Books for Children and Teens,” second edition, by Kathleen Breitenbach and Liz Deskins (Chicago: ALA Editions, 2023).

The book starts off with an overview of the history of LGBTQIA+ literature for children, teens, and young adults; it then takes a close look at the current (as of 2023) status of book challenges and book banning, and the important role of librarians who support those affected by such actions. The following four chapters, entitled “Books and conversations,” list recommended titles for specific age groups: young readers, middle grade readers, younger teens, and older teens. The last chapter addresses the role of teachers and librarians who support LQBTQIA+ students. Additional resources are included in the appendices: recommended resources; authors and illustrators to know; and a glossary of LGBTQIA+ terms. This book is an invaluable reference resource for all libraries whose collection development and programming includes this significant segment of readership.
