The College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences (UL&LS) has an opening for the position of Research Services Librarian for Education.

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position. The desired start date is August 1, 2015. The rank and annual salary is negotiable based on qualifications. The position includes full benefits.

Position Description

The Research Services Librarian for Education will:

  • proactively build relationships and partnerships with students, faculty, and staff in the College of Education’s five undergraduate and graduate departments, over one dozen programs, and four institutes and centers (,, and will deliver services that support UL&LS and University initiatives;
  • serve as the Libraries’ specialist for education;
  • provide instruction on research methods and the use of library resources in a variety of settings, provide reference and consultation services, lead collection development related to education, and support research data needs;
  • keep current with emerging information and instructional technologies, facilitating new uses of research, e-scholarship, and digital tools;
  • be an engaged, innovative, and service-oriented individual who can contribute to a highly electronic, dynamic, and collaborative team environment;
  • establish and maintain strong relationships with colleagues and researchers and employ communication, organization, analytic, and problem-solving skills;
  • work to meet research and service requirements for tenure and participate in faculty governance as detailed in the UNM Faculty Handbook (

Successful candidate may teach credit courses for the UL&LS’s Organization, Information & Learning Sciences Program.

Some evening and weekend work is required.

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library/information sciences program or a doctorate in education by the position start date.
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in education or a social science.
  • Minimum two years’ experience working in an academic library.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in education.
  • K-12 teaching experience.
  • Experience in library instruction in face-to-face and online environments.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with contemporary and emerging information technologies such as web authoring tools, social media, digital learning objects, screencasting, and LibGuides.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Spanish or Native American language skills.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills as well as strong service orientation.
  • The ability to adjust to and accommodate changing demands with libraries, research universities, and the profession.
  • Commitment to fostering diversity and interest in working with a multicultural and international University community.


Primary Duties

  • Builds and maintains relationships with faculty and students to support their research and instructional endeavors.
  • Provides instruction in research and in the use of library resources in a variety of settings; will participate in the first year library instruction program.
  • Working collaboratively with the UL&LS Research Data Services program, this position may provide assistance with faculty, graduate, and undergraduate with their data management needs.
  • Markets library services to assigned subject areas and to the University community.
  • Provides reference services.
  • Contributes to library-wide collection development activities and leads in education collection development.
  • Participates in UL&LS faculty governance and in library management as required.
  • Meets scholarship and service requirements for tenure as detailed in the UNM Faculty Handbook.
  • Contributes to UL&LS initiatives that further UNM’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • May provide effective and timely supervision of assigned employees including all required training, career development, and performance reviews.


The University of New Mexico is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Greater Western Library Alliance, the New Mexico Consortium of Academic Libraries, and leads the LIBROS Consortium of 17 academic libraries in New Mexico.  It is also a Regional Federal Depository Library. UL&LS includes four branch libraries: Centennial Science & Engineering Library; Fine Arts & Design Library; Parish Memorial Library (management and social sciences); and Zimmerman Library (education and humanities). Zimmerman Library also houses the Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections and a Regional Federal Depository Library Program library. The UL&LS grants bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in its Organization, Information & Learning Sciences Program. UNM is a Tier I Research Institution.
