Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico’s dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico’s arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services, including the New Mexico State Library.

Why does the job exist?

As part of the Public Services Bureau, this position provides advanced or expert level information services to Southwest Collection library customers, as well as professional oversight of the Southwest collection, including collection development. The person in this position must demonstrate initiative and a strong customer service commitment. This position promotes the Southwest Collection and conducts complex research to respond to Southwest history and culture information requests.

How does it get done?

The Southwest Librarian provides expert, professional level Southwest history and culture information and reference service in order to provide access to information and guidance to information sources about New Mexico to the general public, scholars, NM libraries, and government agencies. The position also promotes the Southwest Collection services and collections and provides collection development for the Southwest Collection, including NM Reads.

This position serves the general public, state agencies, and libraries statewide.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is well organized, knowledgeable about research library collection development, and has an aptitude for historical research, with the following specific experience and knowledge: Southwest research library collection; New Mexico and Southwest history, genealogy, and culture; providing adult research and reference services in a library setting; and conducting complex library research. This candidate is self-motivated with a positive, professional, and flexible approach to their role; a confident communicator and presenter with strong writing/publishing and professional presentation skills; and has excellent project and time management skills with the ability to work with multiple and diverse groups of patrons.

Minimum Qualification

Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or recognized by the appropriate body of another country) with two (2) years of experience in performing and providing advanced library technical operations, effective library and information services, plus cataloging experience and managerial experience.   • Education and years of experience must be related to the purpose of the position.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.  Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License.

Working Conditions

Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Work is performed in a library office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage, sitting for extended periods of time.  The ability to lift up to 40 lbs., stand, kneel, stretch, and push heavy carts is required.  Some travel in state and potentially out of state will be required.
