Summary:
Under the supervision of the Library Director, performs responsible and varied administrative and professional library
work related to planning, organizing, and directing the activities for children ranging in age from pre-school through
grade 12. Assist with the operations of the library, including personnel and facilities, in the absence of the Library
Director and Adult Services Librarian

Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.
• Degree in Library Science or related field from a college or university; or an ALA-accredited institution and two
(2) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s
Degree preferred but not required.
Knowledge, Skills
• Minimum of 3 years experience working with children’s and young adult library services, children’s and young
adult literature and reference resources, and online searching preferred.
• Some supervisory experience preferred.
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
Primary Responsibilities:
• Trains and oversees staff in projects pertaining to Youth Services, as necessary; verifies that assignments are carried
out properly.
• Assists the Library Director in budgeting for the children’s and young adult collections, services, and programs.
Submits funding requests for programs.
• Submits to the Library Director purchase order requisitions for children’s materials, equipment, and programming
materials; verifies and refers to the Library Director for payment of invoices.
• Selects materials for acquisition and withdrawal from the children’s print and non-print collections and supervises the
organization, maintenance, preservation, withdrawal, and disposal of materials.
• Provides reference and reader’s advisory guidance to children, parents, and teachers.
• Assists patrons in using the online catalog and other electronic tools and resources; assists and instructs patrons in
using library services, equipment, and facilities.
• Plans, organizes, and supervises story hours and other programs for children to encourage reading, viewing, and
listening of library materials and to help create lifelong library users.
• Facilitate and provides library service to the elementary schools and community through programs such as class visits,
summer reading events, and outreach.
• Creates bibliographies, user guides, promotional materials, and publicity spotlighting children’s collections, services,
and programs.
• Creates displays to enhance the library experience and to promote use of library resources.
• Maintains knowledge of automated circulation and integrated library systems; and assists with circulation and
technical services tasks.
• Prepares regular narrative and statistical reports for the Library Director.
• Interprets library policies and procedures to the public in a customer-friendly manner.
