ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Work under the guidance and direction of the Youth Services Coordinator.

Exercise supervision and training over Youth Services Technician(s) and non-professional staff, as assigned.

Perform various professional level library services to meet the education, recreation, and informational needs of the community, with particular emphasis on youth services and early childhood development.

Work with area teachers and educators, providing instruction and scheduling through online registration school group visits and tours.

Knowledge of online registration electronic databases and current technologies for the purpose of statistics reports, library procedures and promoting library resources and programs for children.

Use a variety of print and online resources to maintain knowledge of children’s literature and current trends for selecting and ordering materials for a juvenile collection and program resources for a diverse environment.

Knowledge of reading materials that meets the needs of diverse multi-lingual populations, including special needs and online resources.

Ability to supervise, train, and direct Technicians and Clerks to organize tours and visits, statistic reports and presentations of library practices, procedures and materials for various age groups, including at teacher orientation, both in the library and in the community.

Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of programs, make last minute changes to content and/or program material with small and large groups, and make decisions under pressure.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Provide general and in-depth reference assistance, training and orientation to patrons of all ages using a variety of automated systems to promote library resources and programs for children.

Attend professional meetings and conferences and follow-up by presenting and training staff new ideas.

Maintain memberships in professional and regional library associations and provide training to staff concerning continued library development.

Assist in hiring and provide instruction and training in library methods and techniques, and assist in evaluating the work performance of non-professional employees.

Interpret goals, objectives, and policies of the library to library patrons.

May perform basic duties in other areas of the library, or outreach locations, as needed.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position with a variable schedule, including some evenings, weekends, and holidays.

May serve as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.

May act as a member of the library’s core interview group.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City’s Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program which includes:  pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Must have the ability to work with a diverse population and various age groups.

Must have the ability to guide, direct, and supervise library staff.

Must be able to work on a team and provide mature leadership.

Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS), or a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS), or a degree in early childhood development, and professional experience in service to children.

Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Extensive experience, training, or study in the field of children’s literature and/or early childhood education.

Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library systems and programs.

Candidates that have one year of supervisory experience, preferred; candidates that have experience working with children in a library setting preferred.

Thorough knowledge of library collection classification and selection tools and techniques.

Working knowledge of the principles and practices of office management, work organization and supervision skills.

Must have excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills.

Must be service oriented and have the ability to organize and meet deadlines.

Must have the ability to interact effectively with all age levels and cultural backgrounds.

Bilingual skills (Spanish, Navajo) helpful, but not required.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.

Excellent customer service skills, the ability to be assertive, exercise good judgment, and problem solve is necessary.

Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

Personal computer and applications (such as Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, etc.), online subscription databases, automated library management systems (online catalog, self-check, computer reservations, etc.), online event and program applications (such as eVanced systems, Peek-a-Book, etc.), electronic devices (such as eReaders, tablets, smartphones, etc.), online applications and social media tools (such as Evernote, iTunes, Prezi, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.), copier and fax, die cut and Circuit devices, sound systems, projectors, electronic gaming devices.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  The employee will routinely push fully-loaded book carts requiring up to 25 pounds of force.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
