Position Summary The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center (UNM HSLIC) seeks applications from a highly motivated, innovative, collaborative and service-oriented professional to join our library faculty as our Scholarly Communications and Digital Librarian. This non-tenure track position will provide leadership to ensure the long-term preservation, processing, organization, and discovery of the born-digital and digitized archival content including content from HSLIC’s New Mexico Health Historical Collections, UNM Health Sciences Center (HSC) local collections in the UNM Digital Repository, and the Native Health Databases.  The Scholarly Communications and Digital Librarian will serve as the primary administrator for HSLIC in the UNM Digital Repository. This position will work closely with UNM HSC faculty, researchers, students and staff to assist in scholarly communication endeavors initiated by the library; and will liaise with campus partners on the development of initiatives that promote scholarly communication, open access, and develop open education strategies to further the campus mission in the areas of research, teaching, and public service.  A successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills and public speaking experience with the ability to establish positive and productive collaborations with faculty, researchers, and students.


Appointment is posted as non-tenure track, open rank Lecturer, to be determined based on qualifications; Salary range: $ 50,000 – $ 55,000



  • Provides stewardship of digital collections including reformatted legacy materials in HSLIC’s New Mexico Health Historical Collections, UNM Health Sciences Center (HSC) local collections, and the Native Health Databases.
  • Seeks extramural funding for the processing, digitizing, and making available unique print collections or resources by way of the New Mexico Digital Collections or appropriate repository.
  • Processes analog and digital collections; may supervise student assistant(s) on grant funded projects
  • Strategizes, develops, and communicates processes for acquiring, accessioning, ingesting, processing, describing, and preserving born-digital materials.
  • Coordinates with curatorial and metadata specialists on the cataloging of print and born-digital materials and their exposure in library catalogs and digital repositories.
  • Serves as primary administrator for HSLIC and UNM HSC collections in the UNM Digital Repository.
  • Provides reference and instruction with primary expertise on the use of local and special collections.
  • Coordinates with new and ongoing HSC departments on submitting materials to the UNM Digital Repository by setting-up communities and collections, and troubleshooting issues.
  • Participates as an active member UNM Scholarly Communications Committee.
  • Develops and teaches educational programs and in academic curricula for faculty, researchers, students, and staff with an emphasis upon open access, alternative publishing models, open educational resources, data management, and other topics.
  • Consults with individuals and groups on campus about the retention of intellectual property rights and the open publishing options available to them.
  • Conducts research and communicates it through peer-reviewed venues such as journal articles, posters, or conference presentations.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the trends and issues in academic libraries, digital archiving, and scholarly communication.
  • Trains HSLIC employees on areas of expertise through in-services, journal clubs, and other venues.
  • Participates as a HSLIC faculty member in committee service, strategic planning initiatives, and scholarly activities.

Institutional Information:

Located in Albuquerque, HSLIC serves the UNM School of Medicine, including its Health Professions programs; undergraduate and graduate programs in the College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy and College of Population Health; and two teaching hospitals.  HSLIC serves the state’s health-information needs, including its 22 Native nations. The UNM HSC has earned a national and international reputation for its integrated education, patient care, research, and partnership initiatives which address the unique healthcare needs of New Mexico’s urban and rural populations (  UNM is the flagship research intensive university with a student population of over 36,000.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate Library/Information Science Degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
  • At least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities of digital librarianship.
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of archival theory and best evidence-based practices, especially as they relate to the particular issues posed by born-digital content.
  • Experience processing archival or unique collections; both born-digital content and reformatted legacy holdings.
  • Experience with a variety of metadata and markup standards such as Dublin Core, EAD, or appropriate thesauri.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of copyright and related issues as they support the creation and dissemination of scholarship, such as author’s rights, open access, archiving rights, institutional repositories, scholarly publishing, and knowledge of the associated legal and policy issues.
  • Ability to effectively articulate and teach complex concepts, such as copyright, fair use, and open access as they relate to the academic and research endeavor.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish positive and productive collaborations with faculty, researchers, students and fellow librarians.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including creating and delivering presentations.
