MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license Must meet City’s insurability requirements
  • Two (2) years working in the technical services division of a library.
  • Two (2) years experience copy-cataloging and creating original MARC records
  • One (1) year experience working with the bibliographic tool Connexion

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience physically and intellectually processing library materials including general circulating, non-circulating, serials, multi-piece, electronic, and non-traditional materials.
  • Experience with mending and repair of library materials
  • Experience processing Inter-Library Loans
  • Customer service

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under the direction of the Library Director or designee, will perform a variety of technical service tasks related to the information life-cycle of public library materials. Tasks include receiving library materials, physical processing to ensure materials meet OFPL shelving standards, intellectual processing to ensure all library materials are cataloged according to OFPL bibliographic standards, and continual collection maintenance to ensure our neighbors can obtain information, resources and education through a full range of services and programs as outlined in the OFPL Mission. Will perform a wide variety of high level duties for specific functions of the library; will perform & supervise clerical work in support of various sections of the library; and will interact with the public, including providing general information and assistance to library patrons. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Library Clerk series by the performance of the full range of duties assigned including the acquisition of library materials and maintenance of reports.  Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.  This position is expected to know and be able to use modern technology.  Specific library information technology required for the position will be taught on the job, requiring the repetitive and exacting application of well-established procedures.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

This position reports directly to the Deputy Director.  Though constant supervision should not be required, work may be reviewed in process or at completion of the task.  The person in this position will supervise and train Library Clerks as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Under Supervision:

  • Helps establish and maintain a high customer service performance standard.
  • Assists with general information questions and locating materials for patrons.
  • Performs the full range of circulation desk duties including: Operates automated circulation systems, registers patrons, checks materials in and out, prepares materials for return to the circulating collection, collects overdue fines, provides assistance at public desks within the library.
  • Acknowledges complaints and works to resolve and problems following OFPL’s service standards.
  • Learns library policies and procedures and operates within their parameters.
  • Trains and, on recurring basis, supervises other library clerks and temporary help and provides feedback to supervisors.
  • Performs copy cataloging following OFPL’s bibliographic standards
  • Creates original cataloging records when needed following OFPL’s bibliographic standards.
  • Upgrades legacy bibliographic records that do not meet OFPL’s bibliographic standards.
  • Performs regular database maintenance for the ILS.
  • Assign Dewey classification numbers and Library of Congress subject headings
  • Create and maintain OFPL’s authority records.
  • Physical processing of library materials to ensure they meet OFPL shelving standards.
  • Deposits money and prepares monetary reports related to the collecting of fines and fees.
  • Participate in the preparation and maintenance of displays; assist with seasonal and on-going programs and activities.
  • Responds to patron in-person and telephone requests for library materials, services and basic reference information; assist patrons in completing requests for material not available in the local collection.
  • Participates in the promotion of library services and resources; assists in the preparation of informational handouts for public distribution including calendars and flyers.
  • Perform general clerical work; type a variety of documents; answer phones; enters information into a computer; maintains files and records; processes and distributes the mail.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer, telephone system, cash register, copy machine and other related equipment.
  • Serves on and participates in special project committees, task forces and work groups.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required and assigned.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of library services and functions.
  • Knowledge of library terminology.
  • Knowledge of copy cataloging, bibliographical and circulation systems.
  • Knowledge of original cataloging
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.

  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision and take initiative to successfully execute work responsibilities.
  • Ability to work in a pleasant and effective manner with customers, co-workers, other agencies and departments.
  • Ability to operate library equipment and tools including personal computers, internet, and printers.
  • Ability to perform a variety of high level technical and clerical library work.
  • Ability to use keyboarding speed necessary for successful job performance.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
