POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Library  Director

DEPARTMENT: Library

SUPERVISES:     4+ Library personnel

REPORTS TO: City Manager

PAY RANGE:$35,000 – $55,000

JOB GRADE:  Grade I (Dept. Head Wage Scale)

POSITION SUMMARY: The Library Director is responsible for the overall operations of the Mother Whiteside Memorial Library, including supervision of all Library employees, preparation and management of the Library budget, development and administration of all Library programs, the preparation and implementation of plans, policies and procedures for Library management, and assurance of high quality and responsive services to Library patrons and the citizens of Grants.

QUALIFICATIONS  & REQUIREMENTS

  1. Education & Training: Master’s degree in Library Science (Librarianship)
  2. Certification & Licensing: Must possess or be eligible to obtain a New Mexico Professional Librarian certification; must possess or be eligible to obtain a New Mexico driver’s license and have a good driving
  3. Experience: At least five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in the Public Library
  4. Professional & Technical Knowledge/Skills:
    1. Thorough knowledge of library science and its applications in the management of public
    2. Familiarity with and skill in the principles of supervision and employee
    3. Working knowledge of and skill in computer applications in the library and management setting, including use of the
  5. Communication Skills: Strong communication and teamwork skills are required, including ability to communicate rules and regulations to others, to supervise staff, to relate positively and confidently with staff and the public, to write reports and other correspondence, and to read and interpret professional and regulatory
  6. Physical Requirements: Ability to perform moderate lifting and sufficient mobility to supervise activities within the library are
  7. Other: Should have good self-management  skills and be able to function productively under

PRINCIPAL  RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Program administration:
    1. Develops, utilizes and ensures compliance with Library policies and
    2. Initiates and directs planning, program development and evaluation, and quality assurance
    3. Manages the library budget, including preparation of budget requests, bookkeeping, expenditure authorization, fine collections, and petty cash disbursements, reconciliations, and close-outs.
    4. Identifies funding sources and prepares grant applications as
    5. Maintains library records, and prepares and provides reports to management as
    6. Provides for proper staff and public utilization of photocopier and other library tools and
    7. Supervises maintenance of the physical facility and library
    8. Attends training sessions held by the State library, grant agencies and other
    9. Serves ex officio on and provides staff support to the Library Advisory Board.
    10. Participates in City management and Council meetings as required by the City
  2. Staff supervision:
    1. Supervises and schedules library
    2. Provides for and supervises employee orientation and in-service
    3. Carries out employee evaluation and disciplinary procedures as
  3. library services management:
    1. Selects and directs acquisition of materials for general,reference and periodical
    2. Provides assistance to patrons in accessing and utilizing reference materials and other
    3. Supervises handling of Interlibrary Loan requests and
    4. Supervises cataloguing and circulation
    5. Instructs personnel in MARC cataloguing
    6. Instructs personnel in the use of all computer programs used in the
    7. Supervises proper shelving and maintenance of books in the library as needed to keep books in proper
    8. Supervises receipt of donations, disposition of damaged and surplus
    9. Provides Internet training for staff and public.
    10. Arranges summer performers and summer reading
  4. Public Relations
    1. Ensures and promotes positive relations with patrons and the general public.
    2. Oversees all orientation, informational and public relations programs, and resolves patron conflicts and complaints.
