Employment Opportunity: Library Director Cuba Public Library

Library Director Position Open:

Libraries are much more than just places to borrow books to read. They offer computer labs, host Library events and offer copy and fax services. Library directors are the individuals in charge of overseeing these services, along with the day-to-day operations of the library. These professionals are typically required to hold a master’s degree in library science and may also need to be certified, depending on state regulations. With the Cuba Public Library it is preferable that you do at least have a Grade I certificate.

Position Title: Library Director (small library)

Summary of job responsibilities
The Library Director provides leadership and serves as the library’s primary public representative. The library director is expected to represent the library within the community, develop programs, develop collections, provide budgeting information, manage volunteer, and manage the library facilities.
Job duties
Assists patrons in the use of print materials, equipment and technologies by answering questions, offers basic technical assistance, troubleshoots computer problems, assists in navigating the Internet, locates databases in order to help patrons use library resources. Locates materials, answers questions, requests materials through ILL, refers patrons to outside resources and collections when appropriate in order to provide information services to patrons. Trains and supervises assistant and volunteers to help in these services. Develops collection in response to community’s needs, develops materials purchase procedures, purchases materials, carries out weeding, and evaluates donated materials. Initiates and coordinates programs; advises the Board on pertinent issues, and gives monthly reports on library operations, attends meetings, and participates in fundraising events.  Works with the State Library and turns in an annual report every year. Works with State and County Bond funding and the library general budget. Works with the updating of the Community Assessment plans, etc.

Special working conditions


Work includes prolonged sitting, as well as moderate lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, pulling and pushing activities, manual dexterity, clear speech, and visual hearing acuity.

Minimum qualifications
Three years of progressively responsible administrative experience, including a broad background in management, administration, operations and finance. Knowledge of public library services and operations of library collections. Upon hiring, the library director is expected to earn Librarian Certification I if they don’t already have one.

Our public library seeks a dedicated and experienced Librarian to join its staff. We serve a large portion of the local area, a 60 mile radius. We offer full-time hours, 40 hour week schedule.  Certified Librarian pay rate: Pick up application and information at Village of Cuba.  575-289-3758.

Examples of Librarian responsibilities

  • Assist patrons with finding reference materials and leisure reading materials when asked
  • Maintain library inventory and conduct periodic audits of the information on file
  • Help patrons navigate the electronic records and periodicals
  • Read stories to groups of children (SRP) and conduct play time afterward
  • Check books and other materials in and out of the library
  • Teach patrons how to use the electronic database and its functions
  • Manage the acquisitions of new materials
