Why does the job exist?
This position resides at the New Mexico State Library Technical Services Bureau in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Librarian Supervisor: Cataloging and Database Administrator supports the cataloging needs of the State Library, other state agencies, public libraries, and the SALSA Consortium. In addition to supervising two full time catalogers, the Librarian Supervisor manages and maintains the Integrated Library System (ILS) database. They provide cataloging quality control, planning and implementation of various ILS and database related projects including profiling, configuration, record creation and editing, analytics as well as migration of new libraries.
The Librarian Supervisor applies and ensures the catalogers are correctly adhering to the following standards and polices: RDA, AACR2, MARC21, LC-PCC, DCM, NACO, BIBCO, CONSER, SACO, OCLC, SALSA and local Technical Services guidelines. The Librarian Supervisor applies and ensures the catalogers are correctly using the following controlled vocabularies and classification schedules: LCSH, LCGFT, LCDGT, SuDoc, NM State Doc, Library of Congress Classification and Dewey Decimal Classification while following Library of Congress’ CCM and GPO’s Classification Manual. The position ensures the catalogers work effectively with other staff in Technical Services and the Public Services Bureau. The Librarian Supervisor is expected to actively participate in PCC, OCLC, and PPBL programs.
How does it get done?
Directly supervises two full time catalogers, overseeing all HR activities, including hiring and training. Manages the Integrated Library System (ILS) and any database configurations and related projects. Creates and edits a variety of bibliographic records and authority records for NMSL Public Services, NMSL Rural Services, SALSA Consortium and other libraries across the state. Monitors database use and manages record creation, editing, and deleting. Manages other electronic assets for the library, including e-books and other electronic resources. Creates and distributes library reports dealing with patron activity and patron attributes; collection usage and collection growth; quality control and any other metrics as needed. Serves as the State Library webmaster and administers other library related databases and platforms.

The position supports colleagues at the State Library, other state agencies, the SALSA Consortium, and public libraries statewide to ensure effective and efficient library services to all New Mexicans.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science Degree; excellent written and verbal communication skills; six years of library experience, including cataloging and processing of library materials, demonstrating progressive professional development and responsibilities. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of supervisory responsibility, demonstrated leadership skills and excellent interpersonal skills to work with a diverse workforce, experience with NACO, BIBCO, CONSER, SACO, and CIP programs, Symphony ILS, and OCLC.
Minimum Qualification
Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or recognized by the appropriate body of another country) with two (2) years experience in performing and providing advanced library technical operations, effective library and information services, plus cataloging experience and managerial experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License.
