Position Details:

This position reports to the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) Librarian

• Rate: $22 per hour
• Hours per week: 10 hours per week
• Duration of Position: 26 weeks beginning July 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025
• Location of Position: The home base for this position will be the NHCC and will require periodic visits to Navajo Elementary School (2936 Hughes Rd. SW Albuquerque, NM 87105).

Purpose of this Position: The National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC), a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, is launching a grant-funded pilot project to advance early literacy skills and family learning for Spanish-speaking and bilingual learners at Navajo Elementary School. The project’s primary strategy is to distribute Bilingual Early Literacy Activity Backpacks to students and families. The Educator Intern role is a hands-on, in-person role that involves working closely with NHCC staff, school personnel, and families to support bilingual literacy development. In collaboration with the NHCC team, this position will support overall project implementation, including: program development, school & family engagement, and program monitoring & evaluation.

Qualifications & Preferred Skills:
• Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program with a relevant major or area of study, including Early Childhood Education, Bilingual Education, Literacy Studies, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages/Second Language Instruction, or other relevant area of study.
• Familiarity with best practices for early literacy development and instruction of dual language learners.
• Knowledge of early childhood development and education and strategies for engaging parents in their child’s education.
• Proficiency in English and Spanish with the ability to produce facilitation guides in both English and Spanish.
• Experience working with bilingual/multicultural communities.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
