Employment Opportunity: Discovery & Web Librarian University of New Mexico

The Discovery and Web Librarian takes leadership for library website information architecture and creates a user friendly experience on the library’s web pages, employing excellent interpersonal and communication skills while working closely with colleagues and with students and teaching faculty. Works closely with library technical services and information technology services. Leads the Web Steering Committee and the Web Team. Participates on the LIBROS Management Team supporting discovery for University Libraries and the LIBROS Consortium.

The Discovery and Web Librarian designs, evaluates, and manages the library’s web presence, including its website, mobile presence, and discovery layer in collaboration with Library Information Technology Services. Enhances discovery of library resources and services by students, faculty, and researchers, and identifies ways to improve, extend, and integrate the library search tools and online environments. Applies user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design principles to design web pages that enhance the user experience. Participates in the selection, implementation, and maintenance of web-based applications. Develops and delivers training. Adheres to national and institutional standards.
Position Description

• Designs, evaluates, and manages the library’s web and mobile presence. Assists with the creation and oversight of web policies and standards. Works with internal and external clients.
• valuates and continuously improves discovery of library resources and services. Develops discovery tools.
• Works with all aspects of the content management system including content editing, updates, and development of new pages and websites.
• Conducts content inventories, maps user flow, examines web analytics, creates mockups, lays out prototypes, applies personas, develops style guides, performs web accessibility audits, and applies other UX and UI tools to design web pages that enhance the user experience.
• Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Contributes to UL&LS initiatives that further UNM’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
• Participates in UL&LS faculty governance and in library management as required.
• Meets scholarship and service requirements for tenure as detailed in the UNM Faculty Handbook.
• May teach credit course in the UL&LS Organization, Information, and Learning Sciences program.

• An earned master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library/information sciences program or equivalent.
• Experience designing library or other multifaceted websites within the past three years.

• Demonstrated web skills with information architecture and user centered design. Basic knowledge of ADA web compliance techniques.
• Proven experience working with programmers and strong understanding of HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript/jQuery and familiarity with XML, XSLT, and APIs.
• Experience developing web-based library services including online tutorials, videos, LibGuides, and more.
• Experience exposing content to external discovery and delivery mechanisms such as search engine optimization, mobile applications, OAI harvesters, and campus learning management systems.
• Experience with discovery tools, such as WorldCat Discovery, EBSCO EDS, or Primo.
• Demonstrated initiative and proven ability to learn new technologies and adapt to changes in the profession. Awareness of new web developments and interface capabilities.
• Experience with a variety of assessment and user research methods, including user experience design, usability methodology, and web analytics.
• Evidence of excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Evidence of excellent organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills.
