Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico’s dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico’s arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.

The New Mexico State Library plays a vital role in serving communities across the state by providing direct rural library services through Books by Mail and bookmobiles, supporting more than 100 public libraries, maintaining a research library in Santa Fe, and operating the Library for the Blind and Print Disabled, helping ensure that all New Mexicans have access to information, learning, and connection.

This position helps connect people across New Mexico with the library resources and programs that support learning, curiosity, and community. By promoting electronic collections, supporting Center for the Book initiatives, and offering friendly, thoughtful reference assistance in person, by phone, and online, this role plays a key part in ensuring patrons feel supported and empowered in their library experience.

How does it get done?
This position works under the supervision of the Bureau Chief of the Public Services Bureau at the New Mexico State Library. The successful candidate will serve as the go-to expert for the Library’s electronic resources, supporting access both in-library and statewide, and building strong, collaborative relationships with vendors to ensure reliable and high-quality service.

Through outreach and engagement efforts, this role helps libraries, patrons, and staff discover and make the most of available resources to meet a wide range of needs. By leveraging statistical analysis and actively seeking stakeholder feedback, the role ensures that digital resources remain current, relevant, and effective and has the ability to create data visualizations that demonstrate the impact of our resources.

The position also works closely with the Bureau Chief to support and expand the services of the Center for the Book within the Public Services Bureau. In addition, this role provides welcoming and responsive reference services to patrons at the service point, by email, and over the phone. The ideal candidate is committed to excellent customer service and communicates clearly, thoughtfully, and respectfully with all patrons.

Who are the customers?
The New Mexico State Library is committed to providing leadership that promotes effective library and literacy services and access to information for all residents of New Mexico, including the general public, state agencies, and libraries statewide.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate brings at least five (5) years of experience providing adult research and reference services in a library setting and has a strong background in outreach and community engagement. They are passionate about connecting people with information and confident navigating a wide range of resources.

Qualifications include:
–Current knowledge of the library electronic resources ecosystem
–Strong research skills using a variety of tools, including library databases, government documents, open educational resources, and finding aids
–The ability to manage multiple deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
–Clear, thoughtful communication skills and the ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds

Minimum Qualification
Master’s Degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or recognized by the appropriate body of another country). Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education.

Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License.

Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in a library environment and involves regular use of a computer. Duties may include lifting up to 25 lbs., moving boxes, shelving materials, and climbing stairs. Occasional travel is required.
