Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) represents New Mexico’s dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico’s arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.
Why does the job exist?
The Development Bureau Chief supervises the Library Consultants of the Development Bureau all of whom provide a leadership role to libraries for summer reading programs, literacy, technology, and devices, and statistical data collection on libraries in New Mexico. This position also implements statutory requirements for distribution of monetary funds to public and Tribal libraries and travels the state on site visits to libraries to recommend improvements to New Mexico library operations and the establishment of new libraries. This position manages multiple library national, state, and local initiatives to benefit libraries in New Mexico; publicizes the work of the New Mexico library community and the Development Bureau via social and public media; and requires public speaking and ability to interpret library best practices.
How does it get done?
Supervision and management of personnel. Administration of library programs and budget. Serves as liaison between public and Tribal librarians and the NM State Library, as well as library boards and municipal leaders. Assesses the New Mexico libraries’ longitudinal data for constant improvement of library services in New Mexico. Provides professional development opportunities to librarians.
Who are the customers?
This position serves librarians and personnel working on behalf of public and Tribal libraries statewide and colleagues at the NM State Library and other DCA divisions.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has a Master’s Degree in Library Science or Information Science; five (5) years of public library experience demonstrating progressive professional development and responsibilities; three (3) years of supervisory responsibility; and good written and verbal communication skills. Additional preferences include visionary leadership skills, the ability to build productive relationships through political acumen and effectiveness, promoting collaborative partnerships through civic engagement, excellent interpersonal skills (friendly, caring, connected, trustworthy, and empowering), and operational excellence.
Minimum Qualification
A Bachelor’s Degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of professional level experience with a light strategic impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment.
