Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico’s dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico’s arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services. New Mexico State Library provides direct rural library services through books by mail and bookmobiles, supports over 100 public libraries, maintains a research library in Santa Fe, and has a Library for the Blind and Print Disabled. The Technical Services Bureau supports the technical needs of all departments at the State Library.

Why does the job exist?
This position resides at the New Mexico State Library Technical Services Bureau in Santa Fe. The Cataloging and Database Librarian is responsible for cataloging, classifying and processing for all the collections at the New Mexico State Library, including Rural Services. The Cataloging and Database Librarian also assists with management and maintenance of the Integrated Library System (ILS) database by providing quality control, cataloging support, and planning and implementation of various database related projects. This position also assists with website maintenance.

How does it get done?
The Cataloging and Database Librarian catalogs a variety of items, create and editing bibliographic records and authority records. This position works with the State Library colleagues to address cataloging challenges; works on serials projects and retrospective conversion project, creating and editing MARC holdings records, and editing item records; and works with federal and state documents.

The position manages and maintains library database, including record creation, editing, and deleting.  Additionally, the position creates catalog records and loads catalog records from vendors; distributes and monitors reports and transactions for quality control and other projects; assists with maintenance and design of database configurations across multiple platforms.; and assists with new site additions and migrations.

The position supports colleagues at the State Library and public libraries statewide to ensure effective and efficient library services to all New Mexicans.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has three or more years of experience with library metadata creation and modification using the MARC 21 format, RDA, LCSH, SuDOC, DDC and LC Classification. The ideal candidate also has experience with website creation and maintenance using WordPress or a similar web content management system. The ideal candidate is extremely detail oriented, technically savvy and has excellent interpersonal skills.

Minimum Qualification
Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or recognized by the appropriate body of another country) with two (2) years of experience in performing and providing advanced library technical operations, effective library and information services, plus cataloging experience and managerial experience. Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.  Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with extensive computer use.
