Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico’s dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico’s arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services. New Mexico State Library provides direct rural library services through books by mail and bookmobiles, supports over 100 public libraries, maintains a research library in Santa Fe, and has a Library for the Blind and Print Disabled.
Why does the job exist?
The Bookmobile Staff Manager administers all facets of the New Mexico State Library bookmobile program, ensuring high quality bookmobile services statewide. This position manages the bookmobile program annual budget. The Bookmobile Staff Manager ensures good communication between three bookmobile offices and the State Library administration; excellent customer service to patrons of the bookmobile program; and maintenance of a fleet of bookmobiles for continuous service.
How does it get done?
The Bookmobile Staff Manager manages the Bookmobile Northeast program in Cimarron, New Mexico. The position directly supervises four positions in three bookmobile offices and regularly evaluates bookmobile routes and stops for effectiveness and opportunities to meet statewide needs. The position manages vehicle maintenance and repairs; processes travel paperwork and prepares regular reports on bookmobile activities; and selects books for the Rural Services program. The Bookmobile Staff Manager works with the Technical Services Bureau to ensure cataloging and processing of books.
Who are the customers?
The Bookmobile Staff Manager is responsive to the needs of rural bookmobile patrons, providing high quality library services in areas of New Mexico that do not have a library nearby.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have at least seven (7) years of supervisory experience, preferably in a library setting. Experience driving a large vehicle and providing bookmobile service to rural patrons is desired.
Minimum Qualification
A Bachelor’s degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of professional level experience operating within parameters and guidelines directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience. A hiring agency will designate a portion of the required experience to include supervisory and/or specialized experience. Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements.
Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in an office setting with frequent computer and phone use. The position requires occasional travel.
