JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Archivist / Digital Curator              Department: Library/Museum

Reports To: Library Director                        Classification: M13

Union: Non-Union                                         FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master degree from an accredited college or university in archival science, library science, or history.
  • (2) years of experience working with primary source materials in library, archives or museums
  • (1) year of experience providing research support for an academic research project or providing reference services within an archive or museum.
  • (1) year of experience digitizing primary sources materials.
  • (1) year of experience creating encoded archival descriptive finding aids.
  • (1) year experience working with metadata schemas to describe digital objects, preferably Dublin Core or Metadata Object Description Schema
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid driver’s license. Must meet the City’s insurability requirements

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred qualifications do not apply to MRQs, but may count as points in the final determination for selection.

  • Experience in archival acquisition or museum registration
  • Experience using the International Council of Archives Access to Memory (ICA AtoM) archival management system
  • Experience building digital exhibitions using Omeka or similar platform
  • Knowledge of regional history, culture, ethnography and anthropology
  • Knowledge of modern and complex principles and practices of historical photographic formats
  • Theories of contemporary oral history, ethnography and visual anthropology

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Library Director or designee, the incumbent performs an extensive variety of complex tasks in the delivery of library, archive, and museum services. To properly safeguard the cultural assets and historical collection belonging to the City of Gallup and making those assets accessible for research and study; to acquire and preserve historically significant collections and seek out new items for archiving; work at City museums and libraries and collect and organize materials such as photographs, ethnographic objects, film clips, paper documents, recordings, and electronic data, pertaining to local history; collaborate with library and museum staff to create engaging exhibits; maintain environmental and storage conditions and supplies necessary to preserve the cultural assets and historical collections; to research, locate and provide information in response to public requests, programming and activities.

Work involves extensive public contact. Regular evening and weekend hours are required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

This position reports directly to the Library Director and may receive functional supervision and training from the Deputy Director.  Incumbent may exercise functional supervision over interns and volunteers as assigned.
