Confinement in the Land of Enchantment Exhibit and Programs at the Santa Fe Public Library

SANTA FE, NM –During November, the Southside Branch of the Santa Fe Public Library will host an exhibit entitled “Confinement in the Land of Enchantment”. The exhibit, created by the New Mexico Japanese American Citizens League, focuses on the stories of World War II Japanese American confinement sites located in New Mexico.  Internment camps existed in Santa Fe, Ft. Stanton, Old Raton Ranch, and Lordsburg. The goal of the exhibit is to educate New Mexicans on the histories of Japanese American internment in the state and to inspire conversation about issues of citizenship, identity, and civil liberties.

A speakers’ forum will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, November 3rd at the Southside Branch (6599 Jaguar Dr. Santa Fe, NM). Following the forum at 3:30pm, there will be an opening reception for the exhibit. Guest speakers at the forum will include: Andy Russell, Lead Historian for the project, Nikki Nojima-Louis, member of the New Mexico Japanese American Citizens League, and Gail Okawa, Historian.

In support of the exhibit, the Santa Fe Public Library has organized a month-long series of programs around the theme of “Confinement in the Land of Enchantment.” November programs will include two book discussions, a book talk by a children’s author, short documentary and oral history screenings, a screening of the 1976 film Farewell to Manzanar, a performance by the Reader’s Theater and lectures on Bosque Redondo/ Ft. Sumner (NM) and the New Mexico Dreamer’s Project. For a complete list of events, dates and times, see the Santa Fe Public Library’s events calendar at www.santafelibrary.org
