Description
The Reference Librarian is responsible for helping students and faculty learn how to find information in an effective way. The librarian visits classes to teach information literacy, and is adept with the art of the reference interview. The Reference Librarian is also comfortable learning new technologies and implementing those technologies in online and real environments. The Reference Librarian teaches students and faculty how to use article databases and other tools that will help them with their information needs. The Reference Librarian interacts with students, faculty, and the public quite often, and is an essential member of the library team. The Reference Librarian reports to the Director of Library Services.
Responsibilities
The Reference Librarian should be approachable, amiable, and have friendly interactions with college students and faculty. The Reference Librarian should be adept at conducting reference interviews and show a professional attitude with every interaction.
The Reference Librarian should be competent with information literacy and document the effectiveness of every information literacy session. The Reference Librarian should also be able to create and update online information literacy tutorials for online classes.
The Reference Librarian should be able to teach students and faculty how to use online article databases face-to-face and in the classroom. The librarian should also demonstrate the ability to learn how to use databases at an in-depth level, including administrative functions.
The Reference Librarian should be comfortable learning and implementing new technologies. Some technologies may include office software applications, social media, basic principles of web design, interlibrary loan, and other skills.
The Reference Librarian is responsible for promoting the library. Promotional materials may include displays, art work, signs, and even online marketing through social media and the library’s website.
The Reference Librarian is responsible for collection development of the reference collection. The Reference Librarian serves as a liaison to other academic departments and performs collection development for those departments as well.
The Reference Librarian is involved with local and state level consortiums and attends conferences and workshops regularly.
On rare occasions the Reference Librarian may be required to work evenings and weekends. A minimal amount of lifting is required. The librarian should be able to handle large books and push carts that are full of books and other library related materials.
The Reference Librarian may be required serve on NMJC Campus Committees and perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Library Services or the President of New Mexico Junior College.
Requirements
Master’s degree in Library Science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association.
The ability to speak Spanish is preferred, but not required.

Salary Range $33,000 – $50,000
