Libraries Rock!

Plus, a tip to help you know if your library is getting noticed

In the latest issue of Rolling Stone Magazine, an article about country/rock band Old Crow Medicine Show references the Octavia Fellin Public Library in Gallup and front man Ketch Secor’s recent visit there:

Ketch Secor doesn’t own a laptop or a smartphone, so most days when he wakes up on tour with his band Old Crow Medicine Show, he’ll head to the local library to check his e-mail. “I was just in a library in Gallup, New Mexico, with 25 Navajos,” he says. “It’s communal, like the Greyhound station of the Internet.”

Secor’s account of why he visits local libraries while on tour (Internet access) is a great testament to the amazing resources offered at public libraries.

“It does back up the statement – you never know who is going to come through the doors,” Octavia Fellin Librarian Mary Ellen Pellington said.

Way to go…That’s some rockin’ publicity!

How will you know if a publication (major or minor) mentions your library?

In the Gallup library’s case, the article was spotted by a staff member. But what if an article is published and no one happens to see it?

Tip: Use a search engine alert service like Google Alerts to track mentions of your library online. When a webpage is updated or published with the keywords you specify when you set up a Google Alert (for example, the name of your library), you will get an email with a link to the webpage or article!

As always, if your library is featured in the media, please pass along the good news to the State Library! (You can email me at mary.kaminski@state.nm.us)
