Northeast Bookmobile offers summer programming in Cimarron

by Jennifer Finley-McGill, Outreach Librarian

Laura Gonzales, Library Bookmobile Manager, reads to participants at the event.

The NMSL Northeast Bookmobile hosted their second Color Our World Summer Reading event in the park under the pavilion next to their headquarters in Cimarron, NM. The event, hosted by Laura Gonzales, NMSL Bookmobile Manager, kicked off with her reading a book to the group. It was heavily attended by children and parents and grandparents provided additional support. The adults aided in leading small reading groups where each child was allowed an opportunity to read from a library book.

The Art Truck from the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum offers mobile arts programming.

The event also included a special guest, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum “Art Truck” – a mobile creativity studio. Staff of the O’Keeffe led the children in a zine art activity. They also shared about Georgia O’Keeffe; her art and her legacy to New Mexico.

Jose Montoya, NMSL library technician, checked out books to the children as the activities concluded. Children are offered an opportunity to win a bicycle at the end of the summer  thanks to a grant from the Ted Turner Foundation which provides five bikes.

A young patron participates in the zine activity.

This event is a wonderful example of a community supporting their local library and children’s programs during the summer. Such support is critical to children’s growth and love of reading.

The Northeast Bookmobile hosts an event each Friday during the summer from 9:30- 11:30 am at their Cimarron headquarters.  You can learn more about their activities on their Facebook page.
