STAFFING CHANGES

Pat Emerson retired in October, after over three years in the position, leaving the library short-staffed in the Reader's Advisory area for a while.  We will continue to place regular phone and e-mail orders as quickly as we can, but we may need to limit the amount of time spent helping individuals pick out new authors.  Please make every effort to pick out your titles using your Talking Book Topics catalog and/or our online catalog.  If you still need assistance making a selection, we will be happy to help you once we have finished placing orders for the day.

The best way to insure that your orders get processed quickly is to leave us a detailed message with the patron's name, phone number, book numbers, and/or any other relevant book information such as author names or subject categories.  If we are able to place your order with no problem, then you will NOT receive a call back.  We receive many calls each day from patrons just asking for confirmation on an order or phone messages that just say "Call me back."  Please understand that these kinds of calls and messages only serve to tie up the phone lines for everyone.  Just call one time, and if you are not able to speak with someone directly, then leave a detailed message, and we will call you back as soon as we can, if necessary, or we'll just place your order.

We would also request that our walk-in patrons please call in advance and let us know that you are coming.  That way we can minimize your wait time and insure that someone is available to assist you.  Requests for new equipment must be place in advance of your arrival.

NEW WEB CATALOG

Our online catalog will have a new look very soon!  We've upgraded the catalog to a new interface, which we hope everyone will find easier to use.  You can view the new interface by going to our current catalog at:     http://klas.nmstatelibrary.org/klasweb

The current catalog is a link off of our main web page.  At the top of the current catalog, there is a link that says, "Try out our new version of WebOpac."  Click on this and you will be redirected to the new interface.  You can sign into and place your order via the new interface, or just take a look at it and go back to place your order in the older version.  We will have both catalogs running simultaneously for the month of November.  Starting December 1st, the old catalog will be removed and we will only be operating the new version.

If you encounter any issues using the new catalog, please contact us for assistance. You log into the new version with the exact same login/password that you currently use.

OPEN HOUSE

Thank you to everyone who attended our Open House in September!  We had over 50 patrons stop by, and several groups traveled up from Albuquerque.  It was great to finally meet some patrons that we have only ever talked to on the phone for years.  Volunteers and staff were on hand to demonstrate our carousel storage system and our recording studio.

If you were unable to attend, you are still welcome to visit the LBPH.  Just give us a call to arrange a convenient time, and we'd be happy to show you how the library operates.  Groups are always welcome as well!

NFB DOWNLOAD CLINIC

On Saturday, January 30, 2016, the National Federation of the Blind of New Mexico nad the LBPH will host a BARD Download Clinic at the Albuquerque Public Library, located at 501 Copper Ave NW, downtown Albuquerque.

During the clinic, a number of volunteers who are knowledgeable about downloading books from BARD will be on hand to provide one-on-one training to participants.  In the course of an hour, volunteers will review the basics of downloading books from BARD and help you to download one digital talking book to a medium of your choice (e.g., blank cartridge or OSB flash drive).  If you own a laptop computer with wireless capability, you will need to bring it, along with your digital talking book playback device.

Anyone interested in attending will need to contact either Peggy Chong at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or Amy Boggess at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for a registration form.  Once registered, you will be contacted with any additional information/directions before the event.

In order to participate in the clinic, you will need to already be registered for BARD, and come prepared with your BARD user ID and password.  If you are using a digital talking book playback device other than a player supplied by the LBPH (such as a Victor Reader Stream), you will need to make sure the player is registered with the NLS, and that you obtain and activate your user authorization key (consult with the appropriate player manufacturer).  You will also need to come to the clinic with a storage device (such as a blank cartridge, a SD card, or a flash drive) which will hold your downloaded digital talking book.

HOLIDAY CLOSINGS

We will be closed on November 11, 26, 27, December 25, and January 1 for upcoming holidays.  Please plan ahead to make sure that you receive books before a long holiday weekend.  Keep in mind that books are mailed out the day AFTER you place your order.  So if, for example, you try to place an order the day before Thanksgiving (November 25), that order will not be mailed out until Monday November 30.  We can have an order ready for pick-up on the day before a holiday.

This time of year also typically means slower mailing times due to increased holiday volume.  Please factor this into your planning.  It is usually a good idea to return each book in the mail as you finish them, rather than holding onto a stack of books.  That way items will be constantly on the return and you will not be in danger of having too many books out at once, which affects how many we can send out for new orders.

DONATING TO THE FRIENDS OF THE NMLBPH

The Friends of the NMLPBH is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that can accept and maintain tax-deductible donations for the benefit of the library program.

The Friends' support is used for supplemental funding of materials or travel, where state funding has been reduced, or in areas such as our local recording program, which may not routinely be supported by state of federal funding.  Contributions to the Friends may be addressed to Friends of the NMLBPH, 1209 Camino Carlos Rey, Santa Fe, NM 87507.

VOLUNTEERING

Interested in volunteering to help out the New Mexico Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped?  We currently have over 40 individuals helping us out with such tasks as producing local recordings, machine repair, and administrative work.  We could use more volunteer help on the administrative side, particularly when we need to do large mailings or filing projects.  If you or anyone you know is interested in volunteering, please call us at 800-456-5515.
