State Depository Library Program
The State Depository Program collects publications created by all state agencies with the intention of providing permanent and sustained access to New Mexico citizens. The reports, minutes, statistics, newsletters, bulletins, impact statements and countless other publications created each year by the various state agencies and commissions are a vital piece of New Mexico history. New Mexico’s Depository Library Program was established in 1978 when the State Legislature passed legislation creating the State Documents Depository Clearinghouse within the existing the State Library (18-2-4 NMSA). This legislation also requires all state agencies to deposit copies of their publications with the Clearinghouse (18-2-4.1NMSA and 1.25.10.1 NMAC) in a timely and ongoing basis.
Publications which are printed for distribution to the public, necessitates that state agencies send 30 copies of those printed publicationsor, if a digital version is available along with the print copies, send five print copies and one PDF version to the New Mexico State Library (NMSL). Three copies of each publication are kept locally for historical, research, and circulation purposes. One copy is sent to the State Records Center and Archives (SRCA), one copy is sent to the Library of Congress, and all other print copies are sent to the State Publications Depository Libraries (25) around the state. Any digital version is archived in our digital archive and sent to the SRCA.
Publications which are intended only for digital distribution to the public, either on the web or by email distribution, necessitates that agencies send one digital copy to NMSL. These digital items are archived and made accessible through our digital archive. These digital items are also sent the SRCA for their long-term preservation.

BARD and your NLS Player
Books can be downloaded on to your computer and placed on a USB or NLS cartridge and then played with the use of your NLS Audio Player. Cartridges can be purchased at any of the following locations:
- American Printing House for the Blind, 1-800-223-1839
- Howell Mobility Products, 1-248-548-0681
- National Federation of the Blind, 1-410-659-9314 x2216
- Perkins School for the Blind, 1-617-972-7308
- Vistas Store, 323-663-111 x1245
What you need to download books:
* a computer with high-speed internet access
* an active email address
* a digital player issued to you from an NLS regional library (or you can buy a third-party player)
* the ability to unzip the downloaded files and move them to either an empty cartridge (available for purchase) or to your USB flash drive (thumb drive) that has at least one gigabyte (1 GB) of storage.
Playing in multiple books from one cartridge:
* Hold down the Play/Stop button until a beep sounds to put your digital player into bookshelf mode.
* Then use the FF (Fast Forward) and RW (Rewind) buttons, to the right and left of the Play/Stop button, to move from one book to another. The player will announce the title of each book.
Additional instructions for playing multiple books (Bookshelf Mode).
How does it work?
The digital player has been pre-programmed to play the downloaded audio books. Due to digital rights management restrictions, BARD digital books will not play on your computer or mp3 player.
There are also digital player firmware updates that are periodically available from NLS. Digital players shipped to patrons will have current firmware upgrades installed. This site lists software version enhancements and changes such as the ability to use a "bookshelf" mode that allows users to navigate among multiple books saved on one USB flash drive.
Playing MP3 and WAV Files
The digital player will also play mp3 and WAV audio files. Create a folder on your USB flash drive named audio+podcasts. (Be sure to use the + sign between the words audio and podcasts). Put your mp3 or WAV files in this folder. The audio files will then play in sequence based on their file names.

Newspapers at the New Mexico State Library
The New Mexico State Library’s newspaper collection includes current issues on paper and historic newspapers on microfilm with some searchable online. We currently subscribe to about 50 daily and weekly newspapers from throughout New Mexico. The microfilm collection consists of thousands of reels of newspapers (including many that are now no longer being published) dating back to 1849.
These are the current subscriptions to local New Mexico newspapers. Older issues of these newspapers can be requested by your local library through interlibrary loan so that you may view them there at your convenience.
You can find a listing of the historical newspapers that are held in the microfilm collection using our online catalog. Simply do a search for newspapers and then limit the results by microform. If you need assistance finding a newspaper, please ask a librarian.
In addition to New Mexico newspapers, we have subscriptions to the following newspapers:
- New York Times
- Wall Street Journal
Using Newspaper Microfilm Resources at the New Mexico State Library
The New Mexico State Library's Southwest Collection holds thousands of rolls of microfilm for New Mexico newspapers dating from the territorial period of the 1850’s to the present.
This collection is currently available for in-library use Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. (Please note that the State Library is closed on all New Mexico state holidays.) View driving directions.
Microfilm reader/printers are available on site. Since we do loan microfilm, not every reel is available for in-library use every day. Please check our online catalog or contact the Southwest reference for assistance at 505-476-9790.
Most newspaper microfilm is available for interlibrary loan. The State Library will loan any other library up to 3 reels of microfilm per request for a period of 30 days. Please contact your local library to initiate your request.
Historic New Mexico Newspapers Online
Chronicling America provides access to historic pre-1923 newspapers from all around the United States. Thus far, New Mexico has contributed almost 10,000 issues from 16 newspapers, dating back as early as 1890. These issues are full-text searchable and downloadable free online at the Library of Congress.
This collection includes digitized materials from libraries, archives, and museums in New Mexico. Focusing on the history and culture of New Mexico, the collections cover other topics and geographic areas as well. Over 100,000 pages of newspapers from around the state have been digitized, and the project continues.
